The prettiest bathroom in the world won't work if the layout is wrong.

You can spend a fortune on tiles, tapware and fancy stone, but if the toilet is the first thing you see when you walk in, the shower sprays water everywhere, or the room feels cramped, no amount of expensive finishes will fix it.

So today we're spilling a little trade secret.

These are the four bathroom layouts we come back to time and time again. They're layouts we've refined over countless projects because they simply work. They're functional, timeless and flexible enough to suit everything from compact ensuites to generous family homes.

Let's dive in.

The slim bathroom

This one is the hero for narrow spaces.

Whether it's an ensuite squeezed into an extension or a renovation where you're working with existing walls, this layout makes every millimetre count.

One of the things we love most is its flexibility. Depending on where your plumbing sits or which way the door needs to swing, the vanity and toilet can easily swap positions without compromising how the room functions.

Because everything sits neatly along the length of the room, you don't need a huge footprint to create a bathroom that still feels spacious.

It's proof that small doesn't have to feel cramped.

The square bathroom

Square rooms can sometimes be surprisingly tricky to plan, but this layout takes advantage of the proportions beautifully.

It's one of our favourites for family bathrooms because everyone has enough room to move without feeling like they're on top of each other.

It also works brilliantly as a Jack and Jill bathroom, allowing two bedrooms to share one well-planned space.

One of our favourite parts? The vanity wall.

Instead of becoming just another functional area, it turns into a real feature. Whether that's beautiful stone, textured tiles, timber cabinetry or statement lighting, it immediately becomes the focal point when you walk in.

And if your wish list includes a bath, this layout accommodates one with ease.

The family bathroom

Family bathrooms have one job: survive family life.

This layout does exactly that by creating a dedicated wet zone where the shower (and bath if you're including one) are grouped together.

Keeping all the water in one area makes the bathroom feel cleaner, more organised and much easier to use day to day.

It's also incredibly versatile.

Depending on the rest of your floor plan, there are multiple ways to enter the room, making it a great option for lots of different home layouts.

As designers, we also love the opportunity this layout creates for a feature wall. Whether that's behind the vanity or within the wet zone, it gives you a chance to create a real design moment without needing to overcomplicate the rest of the space.

The double luxury bathroom

If you've got a little more room to play with, this is the layout that feels like a boutique hotel.

Designed primarily for generous ensuites, it creates a bathroom that feels balanced, spacious and just that little bit luxurious.

It also works beautifully as a Jack and Jill bathroom, giving two users plenty of personal space without the room feeling oversized.

What makes this layout so versatile is that it isn't tied to one size. We've designed smaller versions that fit comfortably into standard homes, and larger versions that feel truly grand.

Like most of our favourite layouts, it also creates opportunities for feature walls, whether that's behind the vanity or in the shower.

So... why these four?

Because they've stood the test of time.

They're layouts we've used again and again, tweaking them to suit different homes, budgets and families. They can be scaled up or down, flipped to suit different entry points and customised to suit almost any design style.

The tiles, colours and finishes might change from project to project, but these layouts continue to prove that good bathroom design starts long before you pick your tapware.
